What is L-2 Adjustment of artificial lighting power based on daylight level?

L-2 is a smart-ready service within the Lighting domain of the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI). The service assesses how well a building automatically adapts artificial light to the amount of daylight entering.

The better this adjustment works, the less energy is wasted on lighting when sufficient daylight is already available. The service forms part of the broader assessment of building automation under the EPBD, the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

What functionality levels exist?

The service has five levels, numbered 0 to 4. Each level represents a higher degree of automation.

  • Level 0: Manual control from a central point.
  • Level 1: Manual control per room or zone.
  • Level 2: Automatic switching of lighting on or off.
  • Level 3: Automatic dimming based on daylight level.
  • Level 4: Automatic dimming with scene-based lighting control. This involves setting adjusted light scenes at fixed times, for example regarding brightness, colour temperature or light distribution in the space.

A higher level does not automatically mean a better score on every impact criterion. The SRI works with seven impact criteria, including energy efficiency and comfort, each weighted separately.

Does this service count in every calculation?

L-2 is not part of method A, the simplified calculation method of the SRI with 27 smart-ready services. The service does count in method B, which includes all 54 services.

A building assessed using method A therefore receives no score for this specific lighting adjustment. Under method B, L-2 contributes to the score of the Lighting domain, which together with eight other domains determines the total SRI score.
