Smart-ready service DE-1 · Dynamic building envelope
Window solar shading control
In short
- 1This page covers DE-1, the smart-ready service for regulating sun shading at windows.
- 2The Smart Readiness Indicator assigns this service five functionality levels, ranging from no sun shading to predictive control based on weather forecasts.
- 3The higher the level, the more automatically sun shading works together with lighting and climate systems.
The levels
Level 0
No sun shading or only manual operation
Level 1
Motorized operation with manual control
Level 2
Motorized operation with automatic control based on sensor data
Level 3
Combined light/blind/HVAC control
Level 4
Predictive blind control (e.g. based on weather forecast)
What is DE-1 within the Smart Readiness Indicator?
DE-1 is a smart-ready service within the Dynamic Building Envelope domain of the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI). The Dynamic Building Envelope domain covers building elements that can respond to light, heat or weather, such as windows and sun shading. DE-1 specifically examines how sun shading at windows is controlled.
This service is included in method A of the SRI. This means DE-1 also counts towards the simplified assessment, which uses fewer domains and services than the full method B.
What levels does DE-1 distinguish?
The Smart Readiness Indicator assigns each smart-ready service a functionality level, ranging from 0 to 4. For DE-1, these levels range from no control at all to fully predictive regulation.
- Level 0: no sun shading present, or manual operation only.
- Level 1: motorised operation, but the user controls it manually.
- Level 2: motorised operation that reacts automatically to sensor data, for example light intensity.
- Level 3: combined control of lighting, sun shading and climate system (HVAC, the systems for heating, ventilation and cooling).
- Level 4: predictive control, where the system looks ahead, for example based on weather forecasts.
Each level is assessed against seven impact criteria, such as energy efficiency and comfort. These criteria together determine how heavily the service weighs in the building's final score.
Why does sun shading count towards the SRI?
Sun shading affects both energy consumption and comfort in a building. Well-controlled sun shading limits overheating in summer and helps make use of daylight.
Within the SRI, this service is weighted alongside other services in the Dynamic Building Envelope domain. The result contributes to the building's overall score, expressed as a percentage and classified into one of seven classes.
