Electric vehicle charging in sports facility: what the SRI measures

Charging is about three things: how many parking spaces have a charging point, whether charging is managed smartly on grid capacity and price, and whether users get information on availability and consumption.

In short

  1. 1This page shows how electric vehicle charging counts in the Smart Readiness Indicator for sports facilities.
  2. 2Sports halls and swimming pools often have parking areas, but charging points are rarely present yet.
  3. 3The electric vehicle charging domain weighs 1 of 3 weighting points in the total score for this building type.

Worked example

If everything in this domain is at level 0, the domain contributes nothing. At the highest level for all services, the indicative total score for this building type rises by about 3 percentage points (from 33 to 36 percent, with all other domains at level 1).

Why does electric vehicle charging count for sports facilities?

Sports halls and swimming pools typically have large parking areas at their location. Visitors often arrive in the evening or at weekends, at fixed times for training or competition.

The Smart Readiness Indicator, or SRI, assesses whether a building is prepared for electric vehicle charging. This happens through three smart-ready services within the electric vehicle charging domain.

Which services are assessed?

The first service, EV-15, examines charging capacity: what proportion of parking spaces has a charging point. The levels range from no provision to more than 50 percent of spaces with a charging point.

The second service, EV-16, assesses grid balancing. This concerns whether charging occurs uncontrolled, or whether the system takes network capacity and desired departure time into account, in one direction or bidirectionally.

The third service, EV-17, concerns information and connectivity. Does the user gain insight into charging status, and does the system automatically recognise the driver at the charging point according to ISO 15118 standard?

What does this mean for a sports facility's score?

The electric vehicle charging domain weighs 1 of 3 points in the total weighting factor for this building type. This is a limited but not negligible share in the final score.

At many municipal sports facilities, charging infrastructure is still completely absent, or at most only conduit work is present. This often means a low functionality level across all three services.

Investing in charging points with control and user information can clearly raise the score on this domain. For buildings above 290 kilowatts of installation capacity, the SRI is expected to become a mandatory component in the future.

What this means for you

Owner
As an owner, often a municipality, it is worthwhile to include charging points with control and user information directly when renovating the parking area, since this domain counts towards the SRI score. Combine this with mandatory building automation above 290 kilowatts, so that investments reinforce each other.
Tenant
Athletes and visitors mainly notice whether charging points are available upon arrival and whether they can see via an app when their vehicle is ready. At a higher level, the system automatically recognises the car, without the user having to log in themselves.
Advisor
Pay attention during assessment to the exact percentage of charging points relative to the total number of parking spaces, as this determines the level of EV-15. Also check whether control based on grid capacity and identification via ISO 15118 are actually technically present, not merely planned.
