What is MC-4?

MC-4 is one of the smart-ready services within the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), a European method for measuring how effectively a building manages energy and technical systems. This service focuses on the Monitoring and control domain, specifically fault detection in building technical systems and support for diagnosing them.

Building technical systems include heating, ventilation, cooling and lighting. When something goes wrong, you want to know quickly and understand the cause. MC-4 assesses whether a building has central facilities for this purpose.

How are the levels structured?

MC-4 has four functionality levels, numbered 0 to 3. At level 0, there is no central display of detected faults and alarms. Information remains scattered across separate systems.

At level 1, there is a central display, but only for at least two relevant building technical systems. Level 2 extends this to all relevant systems in the building.

Level 3 is the highest level within this service. It provides central display for all systems plus diagnostic functions. This means the system not only reports that a fault exists, but also helps identify the cause.

Why does this service count towards the score?

Each smart-ready service contributes to the building's overall SRI score, expressed as a percentage and classified into a class. MC-4's contribution is determined through weighting factors and impact criteria, such as energy efficiency and maintenance convenience.

MC-4 does not count in method A, the simplified questionnaire for smaller buildings. This service is part of method B, which provides a more comprehensive picture using 54 smart-ready services.
