Smart-ready service C-3 · Cooling
Report information regarding cooling system performance
In short
- 1This page covers service C-3: reporting on the performance of the cooling system.
- 2There are four levels, ranging from no reporting to predictive maintenance and fault detection.
- 3This service falls under the Cooling domain and counts towards method A of the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI).
The levels
Level 0
None
Level 1
Central or remote reporting of current performance KPIs (e.g. temperatures, submetering energy usage)
Level 2
Central or remote reporting of current performance KPIs and historical data
Level 3
Central or remote reporting of performance evaluation including forecasting and/or benchmarking
Level 4
Central or remote reporting of performance evaluation including forecasting and/or benchmarking; also including predictive management and fault detection
What does service C-3 measure?
Service C-3 examines how a building reports on the performance of its cooling system. It focuses on reporting: does the system show how well it is functioning, and to whom?
This service is part of the Cooling domain within the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI). The SRI is a methodology that assesses the digital intelligence of a building across nine domains and multiple smart-ready services within each domain.
What functionality levels are defined?
Service C-3 has four levels, numbered from 0 to 4. Each level builds on the previous one.
- Level 0: no reporting available.
- Level 1: central or external reporting of current performance indicators, such as temperatures or sub-metering of energy consumption.
- Level 2: the same current indicators, supplemented with historical data.
- Level 3: performance evaluation with prediction and/or benchmarking.
- Level 4: performance evaluation with prediction and/or benchmarking, combined with predictive maintenance and fault detection.
The difference between levels lies primarily in the depth of information. It ranges from simple current measurements to a system that can predict problems before they occur.
Why does this service count towards the SRI score?
The SRI methodology assigns a functionality level to each smart-ready service. That level is then weighted according to impact criteria, such as energy efficiency and comfort.
Service C-3 is included in method A, the simplified assessment method of the SRI. This means the service counts towards both a comprehensive and a limited assessment of a building.
How does this relate to EPBD obligations?
The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires building automation for buildings with heating, ventilation and air conditioning capacity above 290 kilowatts. Reporting functions such as C-3 align with this requirement.
The Smart Readiness Indicator itself remains voluntary. The European Commission is expected to adopt a delegated act by 30 June 2027 at the latest that will make the SRI mandatory for utility buildings above 290 kilowatts of installed capacity.
