What does smart-ready service E-2 involve?
E-2 describes how a building manages information about electricity that it generates locally. Think of solar panels on a roof or a small wind turbine on the site. The service falls within the Electricity domain, one of nine domains in which the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) assesses building technology.
The SRI is a European measurement tool that shows how well a building's technical systems are prepared for smart control. E-2 is part of method A, the simpler of two assessment methods within the SRI methodology.
What functionality levels are there?
The SRI methodology defines functionality levels 0 to 4 for each smart-ready service. For E-2, these levels progress as follows:
- Level 0: no reporting on local generation.
- Level 1: current generation data is available.
- Level 2: both current values and historical data are available.
- Level 3: the system provides performance evaluation, with forecasting and/or benchmarking.
- Level 4: performance evaluation with forecasting and/or benchmarking, supplemented by predictive management and fault detection.
Each level builds on the previous one. A building at level 3 therefore offers more insight than a building showing only current figures without context.
Why does this service count towards the SRI score?
The SRI assesses each smart-ready service against seven impact criteria, such as energy efficiency and user convenience. Reporting on local generation helps building managers see whether solar panels or other sources are performing well.
Without this information, unused or underused local generation remains unnoticed. This matters because buildings with their own generation are becoming more common, partly due to building automation requirements in the EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive).
How does E-2 relate to the rest of the SRI?
E-2 is one of 54 smart-ready services within method B, and one of 27 services also included in method A. A building's final SRI score is calculated across all domains together, using weighting factors by domain and class.
A high level on E-2 thus contributes to a better score in the Electricity domain, but does not alone determine the building's overall class.
