What is MC-25 Integration with the smart grid?

MC-25 is a smart-ready service within the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), a European methodology that measures how well a building can work with smart technology. This specific service falls under the Monitoring and control domain.

The service maps whether a building can respond to signals from the electricity grid. This is called demand response: adjusting energy use to match the availability or load of the grid.

MC-25 is used in method A, the simplified variant of the SRI assessment. This method uses a limited set of smart-ready services instead of the full set of fifty-four services from method B.

What functionality levels are there?

MC-25 has three levels, numbered 0 to 2. Each level describes a step higher in the degree of adjustment between the building and the grid.

• Level 0: no adjustment between the grid and building technical systems. The building operates independently of grid load.
• Level 1: demand response is possible for some individual building technical systems, but not coordinated between different domains.
• Level 2: demand response is coordinated across multiple building technical systems simultaneously.

The highest level indicates that heating, cooling and other systems respond together to grid signals, rather than independently.

Why does this service count toward the score?

Each smart-ready service contributes to the overall SRI score through impact criteria and key functionalities. MC-25 particularly addresses a building's ability to manage energy flexibly.

A building's final score is expressed as a percentage and classified into one of seven classes, ranging from above 90 percent to below 20 percent. Demand response as measured by MC-25 can significantly influence that score in buildings with extensive technical installations.
